Worried about someone else’s drug or alcohol use?
Are you struggling to cope with someone else’s substance use? This might mean that you’re worried about someone in your life because of their drug or alcohol use. This could be a parent, grandparent, sibling or even a friend. Struggles with drug and alcohol use spread much further than just the person using themselves and can often have an impact others in their life. Trying to support someone struggling with substance use can impact both the mental and physical health of others.
Why can’t they just stop?
There are many reasons why people struggle to stop drinking alcohol or using other drugs. These substances can be addictive and addiction is a complex issue. Treatment, support and understanding are all important factors in helping someone get well. It can take some time for someone to get their use under control but with the right support, it is possible.
Where can I get some support?

There are services across Tayside which aim to support those who are affected by a loved ones substance use. Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs is a national charity which can provide support to you to cope with someone else’s substance use.
