What Did You Tell Us About Pornography, Sex & Technology?

We recently asked you to fill in a survey monkey to tell us more about your feelings and experiences of pornography, sex and technology. We had over 200 responses from young people aged between 12 and 25 years old. We thought it was important to let you know the results……

Pornography – Have you ever seen it & Do You Watch It?

  • Most young people (85%) use their phones to watch pornography
  • Around 25% of young people who answered the survey had never seen porn. 25% had seen it by accident and 45% had actively looked for porn. 10% of those asked said they’d been forced to look at porn by someone else.
  • Half of all young people who responded never watch porn. Those who do have different levels of use, with 25% watching sometimes and 25% watching regularly (more than once a week) or daily

 

Why Do You Watch Porn & How Does It make You Feel….

  • 76% of the people who said they watched porn for sexual pleasure or to masturbate
  • 30% were curious about what was involved in porn and 20% said they used porn to get information about sex
  • Other reasons included for a giggle, because friends do or as part of sex with a partner
  • 50% of young people thought they received enough information about pornography from various places like school and parents, but half though they needed more

Feelings you associated with watching porn included:

What Ideas Does Porn Give You About Men, Women, Sex & Relationships & Bodies?

 Sex and Technology – What Apps and Social Networking Sites Are You Using?

The most common social networking sites used by the young people from our survey are Facebook (86%), Youtube (81%) and Twitter (57%) with Instagram, Snapchat and What’sApp being the most popular Apps. You’re using them for lots of different things but the most popular activities are:

  • Speaking to friends
  • Private messaging
  • Sharing pictures and videos
  • Speaking to people you don’t know

We also asked you about sexual behaviour and technology. We focused on intimate images sending a “dirty”, nude or explicit picture) and this is what you said:

•54% happily shared an explicit image with someone they knew

•33% had felt pressure to send an explicit image to someone they knew

•18% had felt pressure to send an explicit image to someone they didn’t know

•25% had shared an explicit picture of someone else

•15% had filmed themselves or someone else having sexual activity

You also told us that 36% of you had had a sexual conversation with someone you didn’t know online. 46% of you had been bullied online and 12% had bullied someone.
