Syphilis Key Facts
SYPHILIS: EASY TO CATCH, EASY TO TEST, EASY TO TREAT
We have recently seen an increase in syphilis infections amongst young heterosexual (straight) people in Tayside
- Syphilis is a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI). It’s one of the most easily caught sexually transmitted infections
- Often there are no symptoms
- Syphilis can cause serious health problems in anyone who contracts it if not treated
- It can be passed on easily through vaginal, anal and oral sex
- Get any unusual sores and symptoms on your genitals checked. Sometimes symptoms can include small red ulcer / sore on the mouth
- Syphilis is easy to test for and easy to treat. Treatment cures the infection
- Risk of infection is reduced if you always use a condom for all types of sex
- It is important to have regular sexual health checks for all STIs including Syphilis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and HIV
Free, confidential testing and treatment is available at Sexual Health Clinics across Tayside, including special young people’s clinics. You can come to any clinic; you do not have to use a young person’s clinic.
